The prodigy, who moved to the U.S with his parents in 2017 over Boko Haram attacks won his category at the New York chess championship.
Tani has also gone undefeated at the state tournament outwitting children from elite private schools with private chess tutors.
Tani resides in a homeless shelter in Manhattan with his family, awaiting a pending application for asylum.
He started learning chess in early 2018 and has already won seven trophies.
At his first tournament, his rating was the lowest of all participants: 105. Twelve months later and his rating has risen to an extraordinary 1587 and counting.
