Thugs reportedly took over some voting stations and journalists had to flee for their lives as sporadic violence hit the Kano State supplementary elections.
In Gama Local Government Area where an earlier election was cancelled, it was reported that arm-wielding thugs in their thousands took over all the polling units, intimidating legitimate voters.
NAN reports that the journalists who were in the area to monitor the poll, were chased out of the place by the hoodlums.
In Yelwa Ward, Dala Local Government Area, a clash occurred when the residents blocked some of the youths brought in allegedly to cause trouble from gaining access to the polling area.
Reports also have emerged from Madobi, Gwarzo, Doguwa and all other units where supplementary elections are in progress, the machete-wielding thugs were sighted intimidating voters.
Kano Police Command spokesman, Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the heavy presence of the thugs in the polling units but said the police are doing their best to bring the situation under control.
The re-run election is taking place in 28 local government areas, with 75 registration points in 207 polling units whose results were all cancelled.
