Senate President, Bukola Saraki has asked the elected members of the 9th National assembly to always recognise that the independence of the legislature is not negotiable and the must lead the way in asserting the principle of separation of powers.
Saraki, at his opening remark for the Senators-elect and Members-elect of the 9th National Assembly, decried the negative perception about the Nigerian legislature saying the misapprehension about the role of the legislature is compounded by its being the youngest arm of government in a developing democracy.
Saraki urged the new legislators to engage the public in the lawmaking function constructively… “so that Nigerians can better understand the National Assembly, and see their aspirations reflected in its activities”.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki lost his re-election bid to the Senate when he was defeated by the APC Candidate, Ibrahim Oloriegbe.
