Protests planned for Lagos, Abuja, Ghana over ‘Police Assault’ on Women

A group, Stand to End Rape Initiative will stage a peaceful protest in Lagos, Abuja and at Accra, Ghana to press home their demands about alleged assaults of over 100 ladies by the police in Abuja.

The ladies were allegedly raped and physically assaulted while in custody.

The group, in a letter addressed to the Police Authorities said the protest march will serve as avenues to give a voice to “the unlawful force and unethical conduct of law enforcement officials in Nigeria”.

The Abuja Protest is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 at AYA Roundabout and is expected to terminate at Shehu Shagari Way by 12pm.

The Lagos protest start by 10am as well at Old Secretariat Road and terminate at Work Road by 12PM on 4th of May.

The group in a letter addressed to Ghana’s IGP plans to stage the same protest in Accra, on May 11 and demonstration is expected commence at 11 am at the Nigerian High Commission.

There have been widespread condemnation following the report of some women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) accused and convicted by a mobile court for ‘prostitution’.

The women, however, alleged that policemen attached to Utako and Gwarimpa police stations in Abuja raped and physically assaulted them while in custody.
