Armed robbers numbering about 20 reportedly invaded Alaafia Estate at the Orogun area of Ibadan, Oyo State, dispossessing residents of their money and other valuables.
Reports say the robbers used POS to transfer money from the accounts of victims, who did not have cash.
The hoodlums, who carried out the operation around 2am on Monday, were said to have collected the Personal Identification Numbers and went away with the ATM cards of some when they could not transfer money from their victims’ accounts due to network failure.
In total, about 25 families were robbed during the attack, while properties in one home were destroyed.
However, it was reported that the police arrived at the estate hours later and were able to stop the robbery, as the hoodlums ran away.
Adewale Osifeso, the state Police Public Relations Officer, revealed the police received a distress call around 3am and sent some men to the scene.
He said, “On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums fled the scene after they were thoroughly resisted. In the process, a pistol was recovered along with three cutlasses and a bag containing both male undergarments and SIM cards.”
Osifeso said efforts are being made to arrest the armed robbers.
