The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has appointed Tunji Disu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, to replace Abba Kyari as the new Head of the Police Intelligence Response Team.
The appointment of Disu is to fill the leadership gap within the unit caused by the suspension of the former IRT head, Abba Kyari, who is under investigation for alleged collusion in a $1.1 million Internet fraud perpetrated by popular socialite, Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi.
Disu’s appointment announced in a statement released on Monday by the police spokesman, Frank Mba, titled, ‘IGP appoints DCP Tunji Disu as Head, Police Intelligence Response Team’.
The police said the posting is with immediate effect.
The statement read, “The IG charged the new head of the IRT to demonstrate his professional competence in his leadership of the unit.
“He also assured citizens that the IRT will remain focused in the discharge of its duties in line with national statutes and international best practices.”
Disu is a former Commander of the Rapid Response Squad Lagos State and was the DCP, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Rivers State as the Deputy Head of the unit.
He was also a former Commander of the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union Peace Keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and Chattered Institute of Personnel management, amongst other professional bodies.
