Dr. Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, highlighted a staggering number of 23,000 missing individuals in less than a decade due to insurgency in various parts of Nigeria.
Speaking at an event in Abuja commemorating the International Day of the Disappeared, Edu emphasized the need for better mechanisms to trace missing persons.
The figure, according to her, represents half of Africa’s total missing individuals and was revealed through a report by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS).
She called for focused efforts to address this critical humanitarian consequence of armed conflicts, advocating for strengthened legal frameworks to tackle the issue.
