YouTube has taken a significant step in combating disinformation by launching a verification system for healthcare workers in the UK.
With health videos being viewed over three billion times in the country in 2022 alone, the platform aims to ensure that viewers have access to accurate and reliable information. Healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and psychologists, have been applying for the verification scheme since June and must meet strict criteria set by YouTube to be eligible.
Successful applicants will receive a badge under their name, identifying them as genuine, licensed healthcare workers. However, it is important to note that the system is intended for educational purposes and should not replace medical advice from a GP.
The introduction of the verification system is part of YouTube’s ongoing efforts to prioritize authoritative sources and combat the spread of false information, particularly in the realm of health.
