Reps Consider Semester-Based Fees for Tertiary Institutions

The House of Representatives is contemplating the introduction of semester-based school fees in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The proposal stems from a motion sponsored by Mr. Sa’ad Taura during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker Mr. Benjamin Kalu.

Mr. Taura, representing Taura/Ringim Federal Constituency in Jigawa State, justified the initiative by aligning it with international best practices. He argued that the current annual school fee payment system in Nigeria poses financial challenges for students and families, especially in light of recent subsidy removal and the single-window forex policy.

To address this, he proposed adopting a semester-based payment system, citing examples from international universities such as the University of California and the University of Sydney. The aim is to reduce financial strain on students, enhance access to higher education, and establish a more transparent financial structure for institutions.

In response, the House assigned its committees on University Education, Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, and Federal Colleges of Education to investigate the feasibility of implementing a semester-based school fee payment system. The committees are instructed to consider the unique needs and circumstances of each institution.

Furthermore, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Education to collaborate with institutions and stakeholders in the education sector to provide necessary support for the adoption of the proposed school fee payment system. The committees are expected to report back within four weeks, after which further legislative action may be taken.
