The Nigerian Army has outlined its commitment to prioritize training and equip its personnel for enhanced capabilities in addressing security challenges across the country. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, conveyed this focus during a luncheon with Frontline Troops of the 6th Division at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground in Port Harcourt on December 25, 2023.
The COAS, represented by Major Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander of Training and Doctrine Command, emphasized the goal of restoring a sense of security reminiscent of the past when citizens could travel freely across the nation and sleep with peace of mind. Lt. Gen. Lagbaja expressed optimism that, with the support of Nigerians, such a restoration could be achieved in 2024.
He assured the troops of upcoming deliveries of helicopters and other essential fighting equipment, enhancing the effectiveness of military operations in the coming year. The COAS underscored the significance of the program, emphasizing the importance he places on the welfare and well-being of the troops.
The General Officer Commanding 6-Division of the Nigerian Army, Major Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, highlighted the sacrifices made by the troops in shaping activities that directly impact the nation’s economic stability. He acknowledged the hazards faced, including the loss of lives and equipment damage, particularly in recent unprovoked attacks by militants.
Addressing these challenges, Maj. Gen. Abdussalam warned perpetrators of such acts, ensuring that they would face the consequences of their actions. He appreciated the troops’ commitment and sacrifices and credited their efforts for contributing to the increased oil production quota.
The luncheon served as an occasion to express gratitude to the troops for their dedicated service, with the COAS emphasizing the importance of welfare in his command philosophy. The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, representing Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara, commended the collaboration between the military and security agencies, affirming the state’s commitment to working in synergy for the collective safety and well-being of its residents.
