Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, passed away on Wednesday morning at 67, after a prolonged health battle, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and reforms. Akeredolu, known fondly as “Aketi,” was a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and former Attorney General of Ondo State. He served as the governor of Ondo State for two terms.
As Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Akeredolu played a pivotal role in championing reforms, particularly in security. He spearheaded the establishment of the South-West Security Network, Amotekun, aimed at enhancing regional security. Despite winning re-election in October 2020 and being sworn in for a second term in February 2021, Akeredolu’s tenure faced challenges due to his health battles. He sought medical treatment abroad and faced calls from opposition parties and activists to resign or transfer power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as per constitutional provisions.
In December, Akeredolu transferred power to Aiyedatiwa before embarking on another medical leave to Germany, marking his second overseas trip for treatment in 2023.
Sadly, he passed away Governor Akeredolu, survived by his wife Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, four children, and numerous grandchildren, will be remembered as a committed leader with unwavering convictions.
