A Japan Airlines plane caught fire following an apparent collision with a smaller coastguard aircraft on the runway at Tokyo’s Haneda airport.
All 379 passengers and crew were safely evacuated, but tragically, five out of six crew members on the coastguard plane lost their lives, with the captain sustaining injuries.
The incident occurred as the Japan Airlines Flight 516 from Sapporo’s New Chitose airport was landing at Haneda. Videos depict the airliner engulfed in flames, and firefighting efforts continue.
The cause of the collision remains unclear, with an investigation underway to determine the circumstances and timing of the contact between the two aircraft. Haneda airport temporarily closed all its runways after the incident.
