The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) is set to initiate night operations by the second quarter of 2024, according to the Managing Director, Fidet Okhiria.
However, Okhiria highlighted that the prevailing insecurity in the country remains a significant obstacle to the implementation of night operations. He emphasized that trains are designed to operate at all times, but due to security concerns, their operations are currently restricted to daytime.
The NRC intends to reintroduce passenger and freight trains on various routes, including Port-Harcourt to Aba, Lagos to Kano, and Kaduna due to the presence of dry ports. Despite the current limitation to four trips a day, Okhiria anticipates increasing train trips to six on routes like Lagos-Ibadan, Warri-Itakpe, and Abuja-Kaduna, with the expanded operations expected to commence before the second quarter of 2024.
