FCTA Demolishes Illegal Structures at Abuja Taxi Parks

The Directorate of Road Transport Services under the Federal Capital Territory Administration has initiated the removal of shops, eateries, and unauthorized structures in taxi ranks throughout Abuja.

Abdulateef Bello, the Director of DRTS, had previously indicated plans for the reclamation of all taxi ranks in the territory after discussions with transport stakeholders. The objective is to establish a unified mass transportation system in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

As a result, the department started demolishing illegal structures at Area 3 and Banex Junction Taxi Ranks in Abuja on Friday. At Area 3 Taxi Rank, supported by security agencies, the DRTS team demolished car wash facilities, mechanic workshops, a cinema house, eateries, and more within the ranks.

Miscreants had taken over the Banex Junction Taxi Rank, using the space to engage in illicit activities such as selling hard drugs and adulterated fuel. Mrs. Deborah Osho, Head of Operations at DRTS, leading the team, explained that the measure aims to create more space for authorized taxis within the ranks.

She highlighted the plan to clean all taxi ranks in 2024 to ensure that taxis operate inside designated ranks, discouraging illegal taxi parks and addressing the issue of “one chance” operators who exploit illegal parks for criminal activities.

Dr. Peter Olumuji, Secretary of FCTA Command and Control Centre in the Department of Security, emphasized that secure taxi ranks are essential in preventing one-chance crimes. He noted that clearing illegal structures would allow more authorized vehicles into the ranks, ensuring commuters can board safe and secure taxis to their destinations.

Deputy Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, Mr. Richard Siso, expressed support for the government’s initiative, describing it as a significant step for transport operators. He appreciated the government for addressing their concerns and clearing illegal parks for the benefit of authorized taxi operators.
