APC Lawmakers Call on Tinubu to Caution Ondo Governor Aiyedatiwa

The lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives, aligned with the late Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address what they perceive as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s disregard for his late predecessor.

Following Akeredolu’s passing on December 27, 2023, Aiyedatiwa assumed the governorship of the state. In an open letter endorsed by six legislators representing various federal constituencies – Adesida Abiodun (Akure North/South), Timehin Adelegbe (Owo/Ose), Festus Ayodele (Ileoluji- Okeigbo/Odigbo), Ojogo Kimikanboh(Ilaje/ Ese- Odo), Odimayo John (Okitipupa/Irele), and Adegboyega Adefarati (Akoko South West/ South East) – the lawmakers cautioned of potential repercussions for the APC if Governor Aiyedatiwa does not alter his course.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, caucus leader Adesida urged Tinubu to step in and safeguard the party’s reputation, particularly with the gubernatorial election slated for September.

Adesida accused Aiyedatiwa of making decisions that demonstrate a lack of respect for Akeredolu’s legacy and of associating with individuals who were antagonistic to Akeredolu during his tenure. He specifically highlighted the appointment of Olajide Adelami, a known political adversary of Akeredolu, as Deputy Governor, and the appointment of Barrister Kola Olawoye, a suspended APC member, as Aiyedatiwa’s campaign coordinator in Owo.

Additionally, Adesida criticized Aiyedatiwa for allegedly taking credit for initiatives that were approved by Akeredolu, such as the payment of N35,000 palliative allowance for civil servants and the settlement of January 2017 salary arrears.

The lawmakers expressed concerns over the growing internal conflicts within the party and the perceived marginalization of Akeredolu loyalists, while individuals who opposed Akeredolu now hold significant positions within the government and party.

The letter emphasized the urgency of decisive and unifying leadership to prevent further division within the APC in Ondo State and to maintain the party’s influence in the state.

The lawmakers also questioned the timing and rationale behind Aiyedatiwa’s decision to dissolve the Ondo State Executive Council, particularly amidst the mourning period for Akeredolu.

The lawmakers appealed to President Tinubu to guide the APC through this tumultuous period and ensure the development, peace, prosperity, and renewed hope for all Nigerians, particularly in Ondo State.
