President Bola Tinubu expressed Nigeria’s readiness to host the African Central Bank in line with the objectives outlined in the Abuja Treaty. His administration intends to collaborate with the African Union Commission and member states to ensure the bank’s establishment by 2028, as per a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.
Addressing leaders at the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of solidarity and firm resolution for Africa to overcome its challenges and advance democratic governance and economic development. He acknowledged external challenges like climate change and unfair global trade practices, while also highlighting internal obstacles such as coup-driven autocracies and constitutional manipulation.
Tinubu pointed to recent military takeovers in Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger as examples, stressing that disagreements over unconstitutional changes of government shouldn’t rupture regional cooperation. He emphasized the significance of maintaining unity in West Africa, citing historical, cultural, economic, and geographical ties that bind the region together.
