The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, under the Tinubu administration, is finalizing the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted food commodities to aid vulnerable populations nationwide.
These grains, stored in strategic reserves across seven locations, are being bagged for delivery to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Despite delays caused by the ordering of bags, the grains will be distributed free of charge to Nigerians.
This effort is complemented by the purchase of 60,000 metric tonnes of milled rice from Mega Rice Millers. Minister of Agriculture, Senator Abubakar Kyari, noted a reduction in commodity prices following the announcement.
Furthermore, the government is boosting food production through the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP) Project, with the first phase focusing on wheat cultivation across 15 states. Phase 2, which will cover rice, maize, and cassava cultivation, is set to commence soon, with significant subsidies and support from both the Federal Government and various governors.
