New Constitution will be Ready in 24 Months – Kalu

During the official inauguration of the House Committee tasked with reviewing the 1999 constitution, Kalu outlined the intention behind the initiative to create a new Constitution, allowing the President sufficient time to carefully assess the proposed amendments before enacting them into law, especially considering the demands of the upcoming election year.

He expressed, “Our constitution, the foundation of our democracy, stands as a testament to our collective aspirations for a just, equitable, and prosperous society. Yet, as we confront the realities of the 21st century, it is incumbent upon us to recognize the imperative for constitutional reform, to ensure that our laws reflect our people’s evolving needs and aspirations.”

Kalu mentioned that the House has already received proposals for bills aiming to establish state police forces, grant states access to mineral resources, increase the participation of women in politics, clearly define the taxes and levies to be collected by each level of government, and create the position of Mayor for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

He noted that several bill proposals, which did not receive the President’s assent during the previous round of constitutional amendments, have been revisited in the current process. These include granting the National Assembly and State Assemblies the authority to summon the President and State governors, as well as mandating the government to formulate policies ensuring the rights to food and food security.

Kalu emphasized the fluid nature of the constitution review process and its critical role in fortifying the country’s democracy. He assured that the House remains open to considering additional proposals aimed at enhancing the Constitution and bolstering the nation’s democratic institutions.
