The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced plans to hold nationwide protests on Monday, May 13, 2024, in response to the recent electricity tariff hike and removal of subsidy by the Federal Government.
The protests, confirmed by the National Treasurer of the NLC, Olatunji Ambali, and the National Deputy President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, aim to reverse the tariff hike, particularly for Band A customers who have experienced a 240% increase.
During the protests, labor organizations intend to shut down key government institutions, including the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) headquarters, the Ministry of Power, and state offices of power distribution companies.
Despite the government’s claims of saving N1.5 trillion through the tariff hike, labor unions remain dissatisfied with the current power situation and its impact on economic growth. They demand a return to the subsidy-era tariff, arguing that the recent changes have not improved the overall power supply in the country.
The planned protests highlight the ongoing tensions between the government and labor unions regarding the management of the power sector and the impact of economic policies on workers and citizens.
