Chinedu, representing Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal constituency, introduced the bill to develop and implement comprehensive strategies to combat the devastating effects of erosion on farmlands, homes, and infrastructure in the region. The proposed commission is designed to provide an institutional framework for effectively managing and mitigating erosion, ensuring the protection of the environment and the livelihoods of affected communities.
The passage of the bill through its first reading marks the beginning of the legislative process, which will involve further readings, debates, and considerations. The bill must pass through a second and third reading before it is transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.

Nigeria is currently facing severe coastal flooding, resulting in the loss of numerous homes and businesses. In April, the federal government identified 148 local government areas (LGAs) in 31 states, including Anambra and Ebonyi, as being at risk of severe flooding from April to November 2024.
