The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to test-run trains powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and diesel.
This move aims to reduce operational costs and increase efficiency. This was disclosed in a statement on Tuesday, by the Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Ahmed Alkali.
Alkali explained that from interactions with the engineers, the process has reached an advanced stage. The Minister also revealed that “this is the first on the African continent to retrofit locomotive from diesel to gas.
Alkali also noted that the program will control emissions and bring down the cost of maintenance to about 60 percent to 70 percent.
