A Spanish tourist was killed by an elephant after leaving his vehicle to photograph a herd at Pilanesberg National Park, in South Africa.
According to eyewitnesses, the man decided to alight from the vehicle and approach the elephants on foot, taking pictures,” said acting Chief Conservation Officer Pieter Nel.
Nel noted the herd’s matriarch became agitated and attacked. He said this behavior is typical as elephants defend their young, and tourists often underestimate the dangers of wildlife encounters.
The matter has been handed to the South African Police Service for further investigation.
