The court ruling followed a case initiated by the Kano State government, represented by counsel Ibrahim Isah-Wangida, on May 27, 2024, against Bayero and the dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.  The court’s decision marks a critical point in the ongoing legal and public debates over the traditional leadership structure in Kano State.

The presiding judge, Justice Amina Aliyu, granted the order upon hearing an ex-parte application by the counsel to the applicants, Ibrahim Isa Wangida. The court order states:

  • The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th defendants (Aminu Ado Bayero and the emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye) are restrained from parading themselves as emirs of their respective domains pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
  • The Commissioner of Police in Kano State is ordered to immediately take possession of the Emir of Kano’s palace and evict the 1st defendant (Aminu Ado Bayero) from the premises until the motion on notice is heard and determined.
  • The defendants are further restrained from parading themselves as emirs in the interest of peace in Kano, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The court has fixed June 11, 2024, as the date for the hearing of the motion on notice. This development comes after the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, deposed the five emirs appointed by the former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, and gave them a 48-hour ultimatum to vacate their official residences and palaces. The ongoing tussle over the Kano Emirate leadership has sparked tensions in the state, and this court order is seen as a significant step in addressing the situation. The outcome of the upcoming hearing on the motion on notice will be crucial in determining the future of the Kano Emirate leadership.
