Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed her willingness to collaborate with Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister, provided he issues an apology for his recent offensive remarks. Their relationship has been strained since both took office, with Kingibe feeling sidelined and disrespected by Wike’s comments, including a threat to unseat her in the 2027 elections.
In a recent interview, Kingibe stated that Wike’s comments about her accomplishments were inappropriate, especially given their age difference, and emphasized that courtesy should dictate how they communicate. She remarked, “I am so much older than him. Even courtesy demands he should speak to me like that.” Kingibe indicated that she would be open to starting afresh if Wike acknowledges his remarks and apologizes for suggesting she should “hang on a transformer” in response to her criticisms.
Wike’s comments came during a public event where he challenged Kingibe’s effectiveness as a legislator, questioning the number of bills she has sponsored to address issues in the FCT.
He asserted that if she believes she is popular, she should run for re-election in 2027, implying that her political future is uncertain.
The ongoing tension between the two politicians reflects broader issues within the governance of the FCT, with Kingibe accusing Wike of neglecting the needs of residents and failing to communicate effectively with her as their representative.
