The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully dismantled 13 illegal refining sites and destroyed several associated facilities in a series of operations across Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states. This initiative is part of the ongoing Operation Delta Safe aimed at combating oil theft and illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta region.
According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, the operations took place between June 18 and 22, 2024. The airstrikes targeted illegal sites located near the Imo River, where seven overhead tanks and numerous gallons of illegally refined products were destroyed. Additionally, seven Cotonou boats and five J-5 buses, which were reportedly being used to siphon crude oil, were also dismantled during these operations.
The NAF has emphasized that the success of these missions can be attributed to improved intelligence and enhanced coordination between air and ground forces. Gabkwet stated that the airstrikes will continue until the activities of oil thieves in the region are significantly reduced. The NAF remains committed to maintaining pressure on these economic saboteurs to protect the nation’s oil resources.
