The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed an explosion at the Action People’s Party (APP) secretariat in Port Harcourt early Monday morning. The blast, believed to be caused by dynamite, occurred around 1 AM and resulted in significant damage to the building’s doors, windows, and other property.
Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that a bomb disposal squad had been dispatched to the scene to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the explosion. She noted that while the extent of the damage was not severe, it was too early to confirm whether the explosion was indeed a bomb.
This incident has raised concerns about potential political unrest in the region, particularly amid speculation regarding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s possible move to the APP, following tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. Some party officials have suggested that the explosion may be politically motivated, calling for a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
