The Niger State Government has approved N50 million in compensation for the families of victims affected by the collapse of a mining pit in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area. The decision comes after families of the victims demanded compensation and threatened legal action against both the state government and the mining company, African Minerals and Logistics Limited.
The mining pit collapsed in June after heavy rainfall, trapping numerous miners. As of last week, 14 bodies had been recovered. Secretary to the Niger State Government, Abubakar Gawu, announced that Governor Mohammed Bago approved the compensation and established a 13-man committee to oversee the distribution of the funds.
Despite this gesture, district head Umaru Aliyu expressed disappointment over the delay in providing assistance. The compensation also comes amid ongoing frustration from victims’ families, who reported that the mining company had not yet provided the promised compensation.
The Galadima Kogo area, known for its mineral resources, has also been plagued by banditry. The state government has maintained a mining ban and requires federal licenses to obtain state permission before mining activities can resume.
