The United Nations has warned that the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria may constitute a grave attack on judicial independence of Nigeria.
According to a UN Expert, Garcia-Sayan, the decision to dismiss a judge from office “should be fair and should be taken by an independent authority, such as a judicial council or a court.”
The Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen was suspended on 25 January 2019 and replaced by Ibrahim Tanko Mohammad.
