The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed a fine of N1.69 billion on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for overbilling customers between January and September 2023. An investigation by NERC revealed that AEDC had charged its customers excessively, leading to a penalty equivalent to 10 percent of the total overbilled amount.
In response to the findings, AEDC is required to adjust its tariffs and enhance service delivery, particularly on Band A feeders. This action follows numerous complaints from customers and comes on the heels of a previous fine of N200 million imposed in April 2024 for tariff violations. The regulatory body emphasizes the importance of fair billing practices and improved service standards to protect consumers.
