Prominent civil society Organization, Yiaga Africa,has expressed concern over the declining quality of elections in Nigeria, stating that the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC missed an opportunity to rebuild citizens’ trust, during the just-concluded off-cycle elections.
In a recent press conference, the executive director, Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, said the off-cycle elections were meant to assess the commitment of key democratic institutions to restoring public confidence. That was not the case in the just concluded polls in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa states.
Commenting on voter turnout pattern, Senior Communications Officer at Yiaga Africa, Mark Amaza observed that nothing has changed from the February 2023 polls to the just concluded off-cycle elections, if anything, he said, Kogi witnessed more youthful voter turn out than in February. But how did that make a difference in the electoral process?
