Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has issued a stern warning to President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests. During a meeting at his Abeokuta residence with six members of the National Assembly, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of addressing the legitimate concerns raised by the protesting youth. He cautioned that failure to do so could lead to severe consequences for the government.
Obasanjo highlighted that the frustrations of the youth stem from issues such as poverty, unemployment, and a lack of responsiveness from the government. He urged the administration to take these concerns seriously, stressing that the nation’s progress relies on a collective effort and a change in mindset among those in power.
The six legislators present at the meeting are co-sponsoring a bill that proposes a single six-year presidential term with a rotational presidency between the northern and southern regions of Nigeria. Obasanjo pointed out that the focus should not solely be on the length of presidential terms but rather on fostering trust in institutions and leadership.
He reiterated that the government must listen to the voices of the youth, as their demands reflect a broader call for good governance and accountability.
