Senator Sumaila Kawu of Kano South has sparked controversy by revealing that his total monthly earnings exceed N21 million, a figure that sharply contrasts with the N1.06 million reported by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). Kawu’s disclosure came during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he stated that while his official salary is under N1 million, additional allowances and deductions lead to a much higher total take-home pay.
The RMAFC had previously clarified that each senator earns approximately N13 million annually, which breaks down to about N1.06 million monthly. This includes a basic salary and various allowances, such as for transportation and personal assistants. However, Kawu attributed the discrepancy to additional allowances not accounted for in the official figures, emphasizing that the total running cost for senators is significantly higher.
This revelation has reignited debates over lawmakers’ salaries, particularly following comments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who criticized federal lawmakers for setting their own salaries. The Senate has denied these claims, while Kawu’s statements have drawn support from other politicians, including former Senator Shehu Sani, who claimed vindication in light of Kawu’s admission.
