Vice President Kashim Shettima has warned the Sokoto State Government sternly about an alleged plot to depose Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III.
Speaking at the North West Peace & Security Summit in Kastina, Shettima underscored the importance of protecting the Sultan, describing him as an institution all Nigerians should guard, protect, and promote.
Shettima’s remarks came after the Executive Director of MURIC, Prof. Isiaq Akintola, raised concerns about an alleged plan by the Sokoto government to depose the Sultan, citing previous depositions of 15 traditional rulers by Governor Ahmed Aliyu. The Sokoto State Government has yet to respond to MURIC’s allegations.
Traditional rulers from the North-West region have started arriving at the General Muhammadu Buhari House in Katsina for the inaugural 2-day security summit organized by the North-West Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme UNDP.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to declare the event open, with seven governors from Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto states also expected to attend. Key figures such as the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar, and the Emir of Zaria, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali, have already arrived at the venue.
The summit will be held on Monday, 24th June, and on Tuesday 25th June and the theme of the summit is “Regional Cooperation for Securing Lives and Livelihoods.” The summit aims to address security challenges in the region and explore strategies for enhancing peace and stability.
Participants will engage in discussions on ways to improve security cooperation among states, enhance community policing, and strengthen intelligence sharing. Governors and other stakeholders are expected to propose actionable solutions to the security challenges facing the region.
