Troops of the Nigerian Army repelled an attack on Maiduguri, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents on Tuesday evening.
At about 6pm, heavy shootings rented the air when the insurgents attacked the outskirts of Jiddari Polo neighborhood of the state capital.
This is reportedly the first attack in Borno since Muslims began the Ramadan fast 29 days ago.
Soldiers engaged the insurgents in a gun battle for about an hour before it all subsided. An officer of the 7 Division, Nigeria Army, confirmed the attack in text message sent to journalists.
The extent of damage is still unknown but unconfirmed sources said some houses were razed.
The source said, “the extent of the damage is yet unknown even as unconfirmed sources said some houses were burnt.”
Military helicopters were also seen hovering over the area of the attack.
