Vigilantes to partner with Police, Army to curb banditry in Sokoto – Governor

Governor Aminu Tambuwal says he is restructuring and repositioning vigilantes to assist police and the army in fighting bandits in Sokoto.

Tambuwal made this commitment in a statement by his media aide, Muhammad Bello, on Tuesday at Gandi in the Rabah local government area.

Recently, bandits clashed with Sokoto vigilantes that led to the death of 21 people in the local government.

The governor added that repositioning the vigilantes became necessary following attacks on Rabah local council area.

“We’re going to restructure and reposition the vigilance groups by providing them with mobility and communications gadgets.

“This is to enable them to communicate with security agencies effectively and for them to provide basic information and guide to the security agencies.

“Moreover, the state government will also provide some allowances to the vigilance members “for the sacrifices they are making towards providing security in their localities,” said Tambuwal.

The governor commended the federal security agencies operating in the state and urged them to work closely with his administration to tackle insecurity.

He emphasized that the state’s security council had coordinated security activities and established peace in the northern axis, including Silame, Bingo, and Tangaza local government areas.

Tambuwal noted that the Rabah council chairman reliably informed that 21 victims of the recent onslaught by bandits were among the vigilantes recognized by security agencies in the state.

He pledged that his government would give cash and material assistance to the families of the victims “to ameliorate their sufferings.”
