The Federal Government has announced that it has fed about 10 million school children under its National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, made the announcement in Abuja on Tuesday.
She also disclosed that over 100,000 cooks had been engaged by the Federal Government through the programme.
Speaking at the zonal flag-off and handover of feeding utensils to the Federal Capital Territory under the National Social Investment Programme, the minister said the aim of the school feeding programme was to increase enrollment of children into schools, boost their nutrition, encourage entrepreneurship, enhance agricultural production and generate rural jobs across the country.
Recall that on Monday, Lagos State Government had budgeted N11 billion for its Snacks for Thought programme. Aderemi Adebowale, the Special Adviser of the Office of Civic Engagement, disclosed this at a ministerial press briefing, saying, “The programme will cost the government N11bn. We are going to partner with organizations on this. We already have over 400 volunteers that will work with us.”
