The Managing Director of HYPPADEC, Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, stated that the Federal Government would require more than $20 billion to dredge River Niger, River Benue, and River Kaduna to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
Yelwa, who stated this during the 2023 stakeholders meeting on flood mitigation and other related issues, noted that the clamour by Nigerians for the dredging of the affected rivers would be difficult for the Federal Government to handle without intervention from international donor agencies.
He mentioned that international donor agencies’ intervention would be necessary due to the high cost of the project.
Yelwa also mentioned that HYPPADEC would launch an afforestation program to decrease flooding in five local government areas by planting trees on five hectares of land.
