The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is conducting a nationwide operation called ‘Operation Mop Up’ to remove illegal drugs and those who sell them in order to ensure a peaceful inauguration of new administrations in Nigeria on May 29.
In the first few days of the operation, 534 people were arrested and large amounts of various illicit drugs were seized.
This was disclosed by spokesperson of the agency Femi Babafemi in a release on Friday, May 19.
According to Babafemi, the raids code-named ‘Operation Mop Up’, is part of law enforcement efforts to remove enablers of crime and violence in the form of illicit substances and those who deal in them, with a view to ensuring peaceful inauguration of new administration at national and sub-national levels across the country on May 29.
The NDLEA boss praised the state command officers for their professionalism and adherence to the agency’s standard operating procedure.
The highest number of arrests and seizures were made in Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Kaduna, Rivers, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Osun, Benue, and Plateau.
