The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’Abba, has passed away at the age of 65 in Abuja. Na’Abba, who represented Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, served in the National Assembly, initially elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999. He later became the Speaker of the House of Representatives after Salisu Buhari’s departure.
Na’Abba, known for his assertive leadership, passed away on Wednesday morning after battling a long-term illness. Throughout his political career, he made significant contributions, particularly during his tenure as Speaker. He played a pivotal role in championing legislative independence and transparency, often clashing with the executive branch, including then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. Na’Abba’s leadership led to high-profile investigations into alleged government malfeasance, including probes into the mismanagement of COVID-19 funds by ministries and agencies.
In addition to his political achievements, Na’Abba was a staunch advocate for education and human development. In 2004, he established the Ghali Na’Abba Foundation, which aimed to provide scholarships and educational opportunities to underprivileged Nigerians. Na’Abba’s family has confirmed that his burial will take place in Abuja on the same day, following Islamic rites. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
