The Niger State government has announced its intention to prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol in Suleja and eight other Local Government Areas starting January 1, 2024. The statement, issued by Ibrahim Muhammad Bonu, the secretary of the Niger State Liquor and Licensing Board, emphasized that the decision aims to enhance regulation and prevent the misuse of alcohol in the specified areas.
Additionally, the government disclosed plans to relocate certain beer joints in Minna, the state capital, beyond an eight-kilometer radius of the post office. Vendors were urged to comply with existing laws established by the board, with emphasis on the first schedule of prohibited areas, including Suleja. The statement warned against illegal activities and solicitation for gratification from beer parlour operators, affirming that any board staff engaging in such actions would face consequences.
The board reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law, emphasizing strict compliance with regulations governing liquor vendors in the state. As of January 1, 2024, the ban on alcohol sales and consumption will be in effect in the specified local government areas.
