Shi’ites attend Christmas service in Zaria, advocate unity

During a Christmas Service at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, Christians came together to promote religious harmony and unity among different religious groups.

The leader of the Shi’ite group, Prof. Isah-Hassan Mshelgaru, expressed their recognition of Christmas as a day for festivities, friendliness, and unity. He emphasized that their participation in the Christmas celebration was intended to renew hope for divine unity among Muslims, Christians, and adherents of other religions. The group’s visit to the church was specifically aimed at strengthening the relationship between the Muslim and Christian faiths.

Mshelgaru highlighted the significance of Islam and Christianity, noting that they are revered faiths, with over 90% of Nigeria’s population as followers. He emphasized that when different faiths come together, it signifies a united Nigeria.

Reflecting on the impact of their longstanding tradition of visiting churches, Mshelgaru explained that over the past 25 years, these visits have fostered improved understanding between the Shi’ite group and Christians. He noted a reduction in fears and animosities, stating that Christians are now more open to the group, sharing sentiments and problems.

The parish priest, Most Rev. Isak Augustine, expressed gratitude to the Islamic group for their visit and encouraged them to continue fostering religious harmony and unity through more visits. He offered prayers for God’s peace to come into Nigeria and address the country’s various socio-economic challenges.

As a gesture of goodwill, the Shi’ite group presented gifts to the Catholic Church, further symbolizing their commitment to promoting unity and understanding between religious communities.
