The Federal Government has updated the National Teacher Education Policy (NTEP) to ensure educators are well-equipped with the necessary tools, knowledge, and skills for providing quality education. Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, highlighted that the revision, carried out in collaboration with stakeholders, is essential for teacher education and development in Nigeria, especially at foundational and basic levels.
The draft document will undergo validation by stakeholders in early 2024 before implementation. The Minister emphasized the importance of education and the government’s commitment to repositioning the sector, focusing on inclusivity, curriculum review, and aligning with 21st-century socio-economic realities.
He called for collective efforts to improve the educational system and outlined partnerships with states and development partners to enhance governance accountability and coordination. Additionally, Professor Mamman mentioned the development and adoption of the National Policy on Senior Secondary and Re-Entry Guidelines for Adolescent Girls, aiming to bring more Nigerian children back to school through focused interventions.
