The automated passport application process is poised to revolutionize the passport acquisition experience for Nigerians, with a scheduled commencement date of Monday, January 8, 2024, as announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
During a recent inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) facilities in Abuja, the Minister, alongside Comptroller General Wura-Ola Adepoju, affirmed the government’s commitment to providing a seamless and efficient online application system.
This transformative initiative enables Nigerians to apply for passports and complete the application process entirely online, incorporating features such as uploading passport photos and supporting documents, eliminating the need for in-person interactions.
Minister Tunji-Ojo underscored the significance of reducing human contact in passport acquisition, emphasizing that the implementation of the automated system aligns with the renewed hope of President Muhammadu Buhari. Training processes are already underway, and the live launch of the automation is slated for January 8, 2024. The innovative approach not only enhances efficiency but also addresses critical security concerns.
The automated system is expected to expedite the identification of fraudulent passport applications, reinforcing the country’s security measures. In addition, the Nigeria Immigration Service has strategically stationed document verification officers across all local government areas to scrutinize passport applications comprehensively, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the process.
