Reps Establish Committee to Study the Oronsaye Report

The House of Representatives established a 23-member committee tasked with examining the proposed reorganization of federal government agencies based on the Stephen Oronsaye report commissioned by the government. President Bola Tinubu had directed the full implementation of the report, which includes recommendations to streamline government agencies, scrap some, and merge others with similar mandates.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen announced the composition of the committee at the start of the plenary session, stating that the committee, chaired by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbare, is to assess the recommendations of the executive arm of government and provide advice to the House.

The speaker added that the committee will also advise on appropriate steps to accommodate those who might be affected by the restructuring exercise. Additionally, they are tasked with proposing measures to mitigate potential outcomes and repercussions of the exercise, along with suggesting possible legislation to support the process.

Members of the committee include Kabiru Tukura, Fatima Talba, Sani Umar, Oluwole Oke, Isiaba Ibrahim Ayokunle, Candice More Chukwugozie, Ademorin Kuye, Patrick Etaba, Aliyu Abdullahi, and Yusuf Miga. Other members are Abiola Makinde, Olumide Osoba, Adegboyega Adefarati, Yusuf Badau, Husseini Jallo, Patrick Umoh, Sunday Nnamchi, Igariwey Iduma, Sada Soli, Kabiru Ahmadi, Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Tolulope Akande Sadipe, and Kafilat Ogbara.

In response to a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Kama Nkemkanma (LP, Ebonyi), Olumide Osoba (APC, Ogun), and Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi (SDP, Nasarawa), the House called on the President to review the Orosanye Report, the Goni Aji Report (which reviewed the Orosanye Report), and all associated White Papers in line with current circumstances.

The House suggested that the government explore implementable alternatives aligned with current realities, aiming to minimize unintended consequences, impacts, implications, and outcomes. Additionally, they recommended that the executive arm of government devise and implement policies to reinvigorate the agricultural, solid mineral, and informal sectors, creating viable alternatives for those potentially affected while also stimulating economic growth.
