The Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU branch at the University of Abuja has initiated an indefinite strike to address various concerns affecting the union. The union announced its decision to embark on the strike on Thursday at the end of its congress, held at the Permanent Site of the institution.
The union’s decision follows disagreements with the outgoing VC, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, regarding the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.
The Chairman of the branch, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, in an interview said that the union had resolved to embark on a total and indefinite strike with immediate effect.
ASUU members rejected an advertorial for the VC position, declaring it illegal and arguing that only the governing council has the authority to advertise the VC’s seat as per the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended.
