Kano State Government Issues Quit Notices To Public Park Occupants

The Kano State Government has issued quit notices to businesses occupying all public parks and gardens in the state. This move aims to reclaim these spaces for public use and improve air quality and the ecosystem.

Speaking at a news conference on World Environment Day, the State Commissioner for Environment, Nasir Garo, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He highlighted the government’s commitment to improving air quality and enhancing the ecosystem, stating that the recovery of these entities is crucial for achieving these goals.

The government has launched an ambitious tree-planting campaign to further support this initiative. In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, Kano State Government plans to plant over 3,000,000 seedlings as part of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project. This project aims to address desertification control and landscape management across Nigeria’s 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The commissioner also reflected on the state’s efforts to recover 10,000 hectares of degraded land for agricultural use. This initiative is part of the ACReSAL project and is being carried out in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
Garo praised the Kano State Government’s partnership with the National Great Green Wall project, which focuses on community tree nurseries and plantations. He noted that funds and lands are being put together for the establishment of these nurseries and plantations in the state.

The commissioner reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to environmental sustainability and improving the welfare of Kano State residents. He highlighted several achievements of the current administration in environmental management, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art soil and water laboratory at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, drainage clearance to prevent flooding, and ongoing erosion control measures.

Overall, the Kano State Government’s efforts to reclaim public parks and gardens demonstrate its commitment to promoting a healthy and sustainable environment for its residents.
