‘No money allocated’ — NOA Denies Reports of N814 Billion Spent on New National Anthem

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has refuted claims that the federal government spent N814 billion on the promotion of the new national anthem. The agency’s Director-General, Lanre Issa-Onilu, made this clarification during a presentation of the official version of the new national anthem in Abuja.

The controversy arose after reports emerged that the Minister of Budget, Atiku Bagudu, claimed the government spent N814 billion on the national anthem. However, NOA has denied these claims, stating that no funds have been allocated for the anthem’s promotion.

The NOA Director-General emphasized that the agency is responsible for promoting national symbols, including the national anthem, and that it relies on its existing structure to carry out its daily activities. He assured that no money had been spent or allocated for the national anthem.
The reintroduction of the old national anthem, “Nigeria we hail thee,” was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on May 29. The move has been met with mixed reactions, with some criticizing the decision.

The NOA has directed Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers to learn the new national anthem by June 3, 2024, as part of efforts to ensure a seamless transition. The agency is working closely with the National Union of Teachers to ensure schools across the country adopt the new anthem.
The NOA’s commitment to promoting national cohesion and unity through the new national anthem remains unwavering.
