The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced the commencement of an audit of inmates across the 256 Custodial Centres in Nigeria as part of efforts to decongest the facilities.
This was disclosed by the Minister’s Media Assistant, Alao Babatunde, following Tunji-Ojo’s inspection of the ongoing 3,000-capacity Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguza, Kano State, and the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo undescored the importance of an empirical and scientific approach to the audit, stating that it would lead to significant decongestion of the prisons.
He highlighted the need for data-driven solutions, stating, that data is the new oil.
