The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to implement a new curriculum for secondary schools nationwide by September 2024. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, made the announcement during the 2024 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Key Highlights
- New curriculum to be introduced in all secondary schools, both public and private, by September 2024
- A stakeholders meeting is scheduled for August 6 to discuss the matter before the implementation
- Education stakeholders have repeatedly called for comprehensive curriculum reform
Addressing Outdated Curriculum
Many have expressed concerns that the current curriculum being taught in secondary schools has not been updated to reflect the advancements in technology, science, and global perspectives. The introduction of the new curriculum aims to address these issues and provide students with a more relevant and up-to-date education.
Recommendations from the Education Conference
At a recently held education conference in Abuja, hundreds of stakeholders from over 30 countries in Africa called for governments to work out standards for the integration of technology into school curriculum. They also recommended diversifying learning pathways for out-of-school youth by developing flexible technology-enabled alternatives for learning, accredited certification, and re-entry to the formal education system.
Lowering Access Barriers to Education Technology
The conference also highlighted the need to lower access barriers to education technology through strategic private-public partnerships that support responsive, evidence-based policy, and affordable solutions for all. This recommendation aligns with the government’s efforts to modernize the education system and make it more accessible to all students.
