Police Denies Claims of Barracks Sale, Relocation

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted claims that plots of land at the police barracks in Falomo, Lagos, are being sold to investors. In a statement released on Tuesday, spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that the police are undertaking a redevelopment project for dilapidated barracks, including the one in Falomo.

The statement comes in response to social media discussions sparked by an X user, @chiditweets042, who initiated the hashtag #NPFBarracksSeries, showcasing images of deteriorating police barracks across the country. Some users alleged that police officers living in the Falomo barracks had received eviction notices and that land had been sold.

Adejobi explained that occupants of the Falomo barracks have received a temporary relocation allowance of N2 million each to facilitate their move during the redevelopment process. He emphasized that the redevelopment of the Falomo barracks is part of a broader initiative to modernize police facilities nationwide.“The NPF leadership has conceived a partnership with state governments and reputable developers to enhance the barracks into modern facilities with improved infrastructure,” he stated. The spokesperson confirmed that the redevelopment is expected to be completed swiftly, after which occupants will be offered new accommodations.

This initiative is not limited to Falomo; similar redevelopment projects are planned for police barracks across the country. In April, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun announced a police housing fund scheme, aiming to raise N100 billion for affordable housing for police officers.Additionally, the Lagos state government has partnered with the NPF to rebuild 25 barracks in poor condition, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure for law enforcement personnel.
